UNIZIK Bans Signing-Off Ceremonies Indefinitely, Cites Security Concerns
Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, has officially banned all “signing-off” ceremonies for final-year students on campus. The announcement, signed by the Registrar, Dr. Chinenye Gloria Okeke, in a memo dated August 19, 2025, puts an indefinite stop to the popular send-off ritual.
For many students, this decision is a shocker. The signing-off day, often marked with white shirts scribbled with farewell messages, has long been seen as a rite of passage. But for the school, the risks now outweigh the tradition.
Why UNIZIK Took the Decision
According to management, what should have been a joyful farewell has turned into chaotic scenes. Instead of smiles and memories, the ceremonies often end in rowdiness, violence, and heavy disruption of academic activities.
The school highlighted two major concerns:
- Security of students and staff – ensuring safety within the campus.
- Invasion by outsiders – non-students who flood the school during the ceremonies, often leading to disorder.
Strong Disciplinary Actions Ahead
UNIZIK has made it clear: any student found organizing, participating, or even tagging along in these banned activities will face serious disciplinary actions, including possible rustication.
For outsiders, the penalty is even tougher. Anyone caught sneaking into the campus for these ceremonies will be arrested and charged with breach of peace.
Registrar’s Final Word
In her closing remarks, Dr. Okeke urged students to prioritize academics over social activities, encouraging them to focus on studies and report suspicious gatherings to school authorities.
“School no wan hear story, na exams dey front now,” one student remarked, reflecting the mood on campus.
The message is clear: at UNIZIK, safety comes first, books come second, and parties come last.
