NUC Approves Five New Undergraduate Programmes at UNIMAID, Effective 2025/2026 Session

The National Universities Commission (NUC) has granted official approval for five new full-time undergraduate degree programmes at the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID), marking a significant academic expansion for the institution ahead of the 2025/2026 academic session.

The approval was conveyed in an official letter dated February 3, 2026, and signed by Abubakar M. Girei, Director of Academic Planning, on behalf of the NUC Executive Secretary. According to the Commission, the decision followed a successful resource verification exercise, during which a panel of experts assessed the university’s human and material capacity to run the programmes.

Five New Degree Programmes Approved

The NUC confirmed that all five programmes have been approved strictly for full-time study at UNIMAID’s main campus. The newly approved courses are:

  • B.Sc. Water Sanitation and Hygiene
  • B.Sc. Journalism and Media Studies
  • B.Sc. Broadcasting
  • B.Sc. Local Government and Development Studies
  • B.A. History and Diplomatic Studies

These programmes are expected to strengthen UNIMAID’s offerings in environmental health, media and communication, governance, and humanities.

Effective Start Date: 2025/2026 Session

Although the approval letter was issued in February 2026, the NUC made it clear that the programmes are to commence from the 2025/2026 academic session, which should be treated as the official start date for academic planning and implementation.

Full-Time Mode Only

The Commission emphasized that the approval covers full-time mode only. UNIMAID has been advised that any intention to run the programmes on a part-time basis will require fresh clearance and formal approval from the NUC before commencement.

Approved Titles Must Not Be Changed

In a clear directive, the NUC warned the university against altering the names of the approved courses. The letter states:

“The programmes shall bear only the approved titles and nomenclature and any change will require the approval of the Commission.”

NUC’s Expectation from UNIMAID

Beyond approval, the Commission enjoined the University of Maiduguri to continually provide adequate human and material resources to ensure the sustainable growth and development of the newly approved departments.

Education stakeholders say the approval reflects UNIMAID’s growing academic capacity and positions the university to attract more students in key development-driven disciplines.
