UNICROSS moves to clean up NELFUND loan records

The University of Cross River State (UNICROSS) has issued a fresh directive to students who benefited from the Federal Government’s NELFUND Loan Scheme, warning them to verify their loan status and collect their school fee payment receipts immediately.

The instruction was contained in an internal circular dated January 9, 2026, and signed by the University Bursar, Mr. Wilson Anyiom, MSc, CCA.

The move comes as the University discovered that although many students’ NELFUND loan applications have already been approved and funded, a significant number of beneficiaries are either unaware of their approval or unsure of what to do next.

What UNICROSS says about the loan approvals

According to the circular, some NELFUND loan applications have been successfully approved and disbursements have already been made by the Federal Government.

However, UNICROSS says that several beneficiaries have not completed the required internal verification process, meaning the University cannot officially recognize their school fees as paid.

This creates a gap between money released and fees properly recorded—a problem the University is now moving to fix.

Where students must go and what to do

UNICROSS has given clear instructions to all affected students.

Beneficiaries of the NELFUND loan must report to the:

ICT Unit, Directorate of Information and Communication Technology (DICT)

There, students are expected to:

  1. Verify their NELFUND loan status, and
  2. Collect their official school fee payment receipt

This receipt is the University’s proof that the student’s fees have been settled through the loan.

Why this step is critical

The circular makes one thing very clear:
No verification, no validation.

UNICROSS says it will only validate NELFUND disbursements for students who follow this directive. In other words, if a student fails to report to the ICT Unit and collect their receipt, the University will not treat their loan payment as official.

Who will be listed as having paid school fees?

Even more importantly, UNICROSS says that:

Only compliant students will have their names included on the official list of students who have paid their school fees.

This means students who ignore the directive risk being treated as if they have not paid their fees at all, even if their loan has already been approved and released.

Bottom line

UNICROSS is not canceling any loans — it is simply demanding verification and documentation.

For every NELFUND loan beneficiary at UNICROSS, the message is simple:

Go to the DICT, confirm your loan status, collect your receipt, and secure your place on the school fees-paid list.

Failure to do so could lead to unnecessary academic and financial complications.
