Biology 2011 JAMB Past Questions - Question 47: During blood transfussion, agglutination may occur as a result of the reaction between
Correct Answer
B
Explanation
There are two antigens AandB found on the surface of the red bloodceils. There are two antibodies namely Anti-A andAntiB found in the plasma. Each individual has a contrasting or different antigenand antibody to avoid agglutination or clumping of blood. Thus a person of blood group Ahas antigen 'A' and a complimentary or contrasting antibody B. Similarly, aperson of blood group B has antigen B and a complimentary antibody A. Anindividual of blood group AB has the two antigens A and B but does not have any antibody. This is because he has the two antigens of the surface of his red blood cells. A person of blood group O has no antigens but has antibodies A and Bin his plasma. Table below Continuous variation occurs when individuals of a population cannot be distinctly divided into two or more groups without having individual that do not fit into any of these groups.
