Biology 2016 JAMB Past Questions - Question 3: When a cell is placed in solution and the size of the cell increases, the concentration of solution is said to be
Choose the most appropriate option for the gap .
A:
B:
C:
D:
Correct Answer
C
Explanation
The solution in which the ceil is immersed in has iow osmotic concentration i.e (hypotonic) while the cytoplasm of the cell has high osmotic concentration (is hypertonic). The cell therefore exerts high osmotic pressure which draws water from the surrounding solution. The movement of the water from the solution into the cell across the cell membrane which functions as semi permeable membrane will continue until the two solutions have equal osmotic concentration i.e. until they become isotonic then osmosis will stop.
