Biology 2016 JAMB Past Questions - Question 20: The type of asexual reproduction that is common to both Paramechtm and Protists is
Correct Answer
D
Explanation
Binary fission is an asexual reproduction in which unicellular organisms collectively called Protista consisting of protophyta e.g Chlamydomonas, chlorella, euglena etc and protozoa e.g amoeba, paramecia etc divide into two starting from the nucleus and later cytoplasm to form two new organisms. Fragmentation occurs inmulticellular organisms such as spirogyra which cuts into bjts and each bitundergoes binary fission to form a new filament of about sixteen cylindrical cells arranged in a long row Budding Is an asexual Reproduction in which an out growth or protrusion occurs on the body of an organism The protrusion enlarges while the base constricts and cuts off to form a new organism. It occurs in yeast cells and hydra. Sporulation is an asexual reproduction exhibited by fungi e.g. Mucor, Rhizopus etc. in which the tip of the vertical hypha called sporangiophore swells to form sporangium which bears spores. When the sporangium ripe and bursts t sets the spores free. When the spores fall on wet environment, they germinate to form new fungi (Rhizopus).
