Biology 2015 JAMB Past Questions - Question 2: One adaptation shown by hydrophytes in fresh water habitats is the
Correct Answer
A
Explanation
Hydrophytes are plants that lives in water either fixed at the edges/banks of the river or marine or found floating on water surface. Fresh water floating plants usually have their shoots (especially the upper surfaces of the leaves covered with wax to make them repel or push out excess water coming out from the numerous stomata to preventclogging of the stomata. This provides enough room .for photosynthesis andrespiration to occur through these leaves. Freshwater plants have poor root development. They have adventitious roots which are special type of fibrous roots used not for anchorage or support but to allow the plant to drift in water. The leaves are usually broad to provide enough surfaces for evaporation of excess water absorbed. Possession of spiny and scaly leaves is characteristics of desert plants
