Biology 2014 JAMB Past Questions - Question 18: The use of moist skin for respiration in amphibians is known as
Correct Answer
B
Explanation
Cutaneous or skin respiration is carried out by earthworm and amphibians such as toads and frogs through their moist skin. Oxygen dissolves in the moisture on the skin forming a hypertonic solution (solution of high osmotic concentration). Oxygen in the moisture diffuses through the skin and enters into the blood capillaries while carbon(iv) oxide in high osmotic concentration in the blood diffuses out of the skin. Buccal or mouthrespiration is carried by amphibians when they are on land. The buccal cavity is lined with r membrane richly supplied with numerous blood capillaries. As enters the mouth through the nostrils, oxygen in the inhaled air diffuses into the blood capillaries while carbon (iv)oxide diffuses out of the blood into the mouth and is excreted through nostrils. cellular or tissue or internal respiration is the oxidation of glucose in the presence of oxygen to release energy stored as ATP.
