Biology 2015 JAMB Past Questions - Question 17: An example of a fish that aestivates is
Correct Answer
B
Explanation
Aestivation is a behavioral adaptation in which some animals stay in a safe and cold area during dry season or hot weather and remain there until rainy season returns, e.g. African lung fish, snails, frogs etc. The African lung fish burrows into the mud along the banks of the river and constructs a chamber called cocoon. The cocoon consists of a chamber where the fish stays and a funnel that !eadsotothe surface of the mud through which air enters and the fish obtains it for respiration. During this. period, the fish does not feed or reproduce rather it relies on stored food in the body. The soft body of the snail moves into the shell and is covered by chalky material. The opposite of aestivation is hibernation found in temperate regions. shark is found in ocean, catfish is found in the river but does not undergo aestivation.
