Desert plants like cactus have their leaves modified into spines to reduce the number of stomata and rate of transpiration. Some desert plants eg. evergreen shrub called hakea has leaves with sunken stormata or folded leaves to conserve water. Rain forest plants have broad leaves with numerous prominent stomata to eliminate excess water. Spongy mesophyll is the lower layer of the internal structure of a leaf.
