JAMB 2016 - Question 11
Biology 2016 JAMB Past Questions - Question 11: The movement of blood between the heart and all other parts of the body besides the lung is known as
Correct Answer
A
Explanation
Systemic circulation is one in which the heart (Sett ventricle) pumps oxygenated blood to every part of the body while pulmonary circulation is one in which the heart (right venerid)pumps deoxygenated blood to the left and right lungs for gaseous exchange. Opened circulatory system occurs in most invertebrates in which the heart is tube-like dorsally placed and extends the whole length of the body of the organism. The heart pumps blood Into the single dorsal blood vessel called the Aorta. From the aorta the blood enters into the haemocoel i.e body cavity. The blood bathes the cell and returns back to the heart through paired openings on the heart called ostia. Closed circulatory system -This is found in vertebrates and earth worm in which the heart pumps blood which flows through the arteries via the aorta and flows into the veins. The blood is returned from the veins via the vena cava (largest vein) to the heart. Blood does not flow directly into the body cavity called coelom. Thus blood requires the assistance of the lymphatic vessels to effect the exchange of materials between the cells and the body fluids.
