Explanation

Most birds have four types of feathers quill, down, covert and filoplume. Quill feathers- are large and stiff located at the wings rod tails. They are used for flight. Down feathers are fluffy and trap a layer of air close to the body. They insulate the body. Filoplumes are very small hair-like feathers which are sparsely distributed over the body. They grow inclusters with unknown functions. Covert feathers are next to quill feathers in terms of size. They cover most of the body of birds especially the breast region and also help to keep the body warm.
