{"id":9255,"date":"2025-10-27T11:04:23","date_gmt":"2025-10-27T11:04:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/examkits.com\/blog\/?p=9255"},"modified":"2025-10-27T11:04:24","modified_gmt":"2025-10-27T11:04:24","slug":"asuu-suspends-two-week-warning-strike-gives-fg-one-month-ultimatum","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/examkits.com\/blog\/asuu-suspends-two-week-warning-strike-gives-fg-one-month-ultimatum\/","title":{"rendered":"ASUU Suspends Two-Week Warning Strike, Gives FG One-Month Ultimatum"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has suspended its two-week warning strike, granting the Federal Government a <strong>one-month window<\/strong> to finalise the renegotiation of the <strong>2009 FGN\/ASUU Agreement<\/strong> and address long-standing issues affecting Nigeria\u2019s public universities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The announcement was made on <strong>Wednesday<\/strong> by <strong>ASUU President, Professor Chris Piwuna<\/strong>, during a press briefing in Abuja. He said the decision followed <strong>productive discussions<\/strong> with government officials and mediation efforts by the <strong>National Assembly<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why ASUU Declared the Strike<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Professor Piwuna explained that ASUU embarked on the warning strike on <strong>October 13, 2025<\/strong>, after the government failed to respond to repeated appeals to conclude the renegotiation of the 2009 Agreement and improve lecturers\u2019 welfare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen we gathered here about 10 days ago to declare the warning strike, it was a painful move made out of necessity,\u201d Piwuna said. \u201cThe government had ignored several requests to resolve issues vital to the survival of Nigeria\u2019s public universities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He added that the strike was a last resort after <strong>peaceful channels<\/strong> had been exhausted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Progress Made During Negotiations<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Following the strike declaration, the Federal Government re-engaged ASUU through a <strong>committee led by Alhaji Yayale Ahmed<\/strong>, which met with union representatives on <strong>October 16 and 18, 2025<\/strong>. The meetings reviewed the government\u2019s position on the draft renegotiated agreement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Piwuna, while not all issues have been resolved, <strong>significant progress<\/strong> has been made compared to the pre-strike situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cWe have not achieved every objective, but we are certainly not where we were before the strike began,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>He commended the <strong>Senate Committees on Tertiary Education and TETFund<\/strong>, the <strong>Labour Committee<\/strong>, and <strong>Deputy Senate President Senator Barau Jibrin<\/strong> for mediating the renewed talks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">NEC\u2019s Decision to Suspend the Strike<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The decision to suspend the strike came after an <strong>emergency National Executive Council (NEC) meeting<\/strong> held between <strong>October 21 and 22, 2025<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The NEC concluded that the warning strike had achieved its purpose by compelling the government to <strong>return to the negotiation table<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ASUU said the temporary suspension was to allow for <strong>continued dialogue<\/strong> and to consider the interests of <strong>students, parents, the media, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC)<\/strong>, and other Nigerians who expressed support and understanding throughout the industrial action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Happens Next<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>While the suspension signals a <strong>temporary truce<\/strong>, ASUU warned that if the Federal Government fails to deliver on its promises within the <strong>one-month grace period<\/strong>, the union may <strong>resume industrial action without further notice<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Professor Piwuna reaffirmed ASUU\u2019s commitment to revitalising Nigeria\u2019s public universities and urged Nigerians to hold the government accountable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cThe struggle continues,\u201d he said. \u201cSustaining harmony in our universities requires mutual respect and genuine action from both sides.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Closing Note<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The suspension of ASUU\u2019s warning strike is seen as a step toward restoring stability in Nigeria\u2019s tertiary education system.
