According to Dr. Alausa, over <strong>two million candidates sit for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME)<\/strong> annually, yet only around <strong>700,000<\/strong> secure admission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe issue has never been a lack of talent,\u201d Dr. Alausa explained. \u201cIt\u2019s that our outdated and restrictive entry requirements have prevented many capable students from pursuing their dreams.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The newly approved <strong>National Guidelines for Entry Requirements into Nigerian Tertiary Institutions<\/strong> aim to <strong>modernize the system, promote fairness, and expand opportunities<\/strong>\u2014all while maintaining academic quality and integrity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Updated Entry Requirements by Institution Type<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1. Universities:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Five credit passes in relevant subjects, including <strong>English Language<\/strong>, in not more than <strong>two sittings<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Mathematics<\/strong> is compulsory for Science, Technology, and Social Science courses.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2. Polytechnics (ND Level):<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Four credit passes in relevant subjects, including <strong>English Language<\/strong> for non-science programmes, and <strong>Mathematics<\/strong> for science-related fields.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3. Polytechnics (HND Level):<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Five credit passes in relevant subjects, including <strong>English Language<\/strong> and <strong>Mathematics<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>4. Colleges of Education (NCE Level):<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Four credit passes in relevant subjects.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>English Language<\/strong> is mandatory for Arts and Social Science courses, while <strong>Mathematics<\/strong> is required for Science, Vocational, and Technical programmes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>5. Colleges of Education (B.Ed Level):<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Five credit passes, including <strong>English Language<\/strong> and <strong>Mathematics<\/strong>, depending on the course.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>6. Innovation Enterprise Academies (IEAs):<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Same minimum requirements as Polytechnics for ND-level entry.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <strong>National Innovation Diploma (NID)<\/strong> has been <strong>discontinued<\/strong> and replaced with the <strong>National Diploma (ND)<\/strong> for uniformity and better career progression.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Uniform Standards and Expanded Opportunities<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The reform introduces a single qualification standard\u2014the <strong>National Diploma (ND)<\/strong>\u2014to replace the National Innovation Diploma, ensuring <strong>consistency across institutions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>National Board for Technical Education (NBTE)<\/strong> has begun re-accrediting all <strong>Innovation Enterprise Academies<\/strong> nationwide to align them with the ND benchmark.
