Exams Halted as ASUU Begins Two-Week Warning Strike<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Examinations in several Nigerian universities came to an abrupt stop on Monday as the <strong>Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU)<\/strong> commenced a <strong>two-week warning strike<\/strong>, leaving thousands of students stranded and campuses in disarray.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From <strong>Jigawa<\/strong> to <strong>Edo State<\/strong>, academic activities were paralyzed as lecturers withdrew from examination duties, forcing many schools to postpone or outright cancel scheduled papers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cWe were told through our class WhatsApp group that our paper was postponed indefinitely,\u201d said <strong>Abdulqawiy Abdulazeez<\/strong>, a Zoology student at the Federal University Dutse. \u201cNo one knows when we\u2019ll resume.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Universities Caught Off Guard<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the most affected institutions are the <strong>Federal University Dutse (FUD)<\/strong>, <strong>University of Jos (UNIJOS)<\/strong>, and the <strong>University of Benin (UNIBEN)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At FUD, students had been writing their second-semester exams since <strong>September 30<\/strong>, with plans to conclude by <strong>October 18<\/strong>\u2014plans now derailed by the strike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Similarly, <strong>UNIBEN<\/strong> was forced to suspend examinations already in progress, while at <strong>UNIJOS<\/strong>, students received last-minute cancellations just minutes before scheduled papers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some universities, like <strong>Bayero University Kano (BUK)<\/strong> and <strong>Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU)<\/strong>, narrowly escaped the chaos, having wrapped up their exams shortly before ASUU\u2019s industrial action began.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A student from ATBU told <em>Premium Times<\/em> that while most exams were completed, some final-year students remain unable to defend their research projects due to the strike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why ASUU Is on Strike<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>ASUU says it has no choice but to act after what it described as the Federal Government\u2019s <em>\u201cpersistent neglect and failure to fulfill promises.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The union\u2019s demands include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Full implementation of the <strong>renegotiated 2009 FGN\u2013ASUU Agreement<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Release of <strong>withheld 3\u00bd months\u2019 salaries<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Payment of <strong>25\u201335% salary arrears<\/strong> and <strong>promotion arrears<\/strong> pending for over four years<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Settlement of <strong>unpaid deductions<\/strong> for cooperative societies and union dues<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite repeated letters and meetings, ASUU claims the government has failed to address these long-standing grievances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cOur meeting with the government on October 10 was unproductive,\u201d the union said in a statement. \u201cWe are tired of empty promises.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Federal Government Orders \u2018No Work, No Pay\u2019<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In swift retaliation, the <strong>Federal Government<\/strong> has directed all vice-chancellors of federal universities to enforce the <strong>\u201cno work, no pay\u201d<\/strong> policy against lecturers participating in the strike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A letter issued by <strong>Dr. Tunji Alausa<\/strong>, the <strong>Minister of Education<\/strong>, instructed vice-chancellors to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol>\n<li>Conduct a roll call and physical headcount of all teaching staff<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Submit detailed reports showing who is working and who is absent<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Withhold salaries of lecturers not performing their duties<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Alausa accused ASUU of refusing to engage constructively with the government, insisting that dialogue remains open if the union calls off its strike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ASUU, however, maintains that the government\u2019s actions are punitive and counterproductive, vowing to continue the warning strike until concrete progress is made.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Students Left in Uncertainty<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>For many students, the sudden strike has left academic plans in limbo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cI had my final paper and project meeting scheduled for October 15.
