Since its launch in 2012, the prize has become a powerful platform for emerging voices\u2014especially those from small towns, rural areas, and places often overlooked by mainstream publishing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Every year, between <strong>6,000 and 7,000 entries<\/strong> pour in from across the world, making it one of the biggest short story competitions for unpublished fiction. The aim is simple: to give <strong>new and unheard voices a stage<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What the Prize Offers<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Commonwealth Short Story Prize is structured to reward both regional and global excellence in storytelling:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Five regional winners<\/strong> (Africa, Asia, Canada &amp; Europe, Caribbean, Pacific) each receive <strong>\u00a32,500<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>One overall winner<\/strong> is selected from the five and awarded <strong>\u00a35,000<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>All winning stories will be <strong>published in <em>Granta<\/em><\/strong>, one of the world\u2019s leading literary magazines, giving writers global recognition.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This combination of financial support and international exposure makes the prize a life-changing opportunity for many first-time authors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who Can Apply?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>To be eligible for the Commonwealth Short Story Prize 2026, applicants must meet the following requirements:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Be a <strong>citizen of a Commonwealth country<\/strong> or a stateless person currently living in one.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Be <strong>18 years or older by 1 November 2025<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Submit an <strong>unpublished short story<\/strong>, which must remain unpublished in any language until at least 1 May 2026.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Previous overall winners cannot re-enter. Writers who have won three times regionally are also ineligible.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dual citizens will be judged in the region where they permanently reside.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Staff of the Commonwealth Foundation are not allowed to enter.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Note:<\/em> Stories that have been shortlisted or won other prizes (but not published) are still eligible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Regions Covered<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The prize celebrates voices from all corners of the Commonwealth, grouped into five key regions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Africa<\/strong> \u2013 Nigeria, South Africa, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, and more.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Asia<\/strong> \u2013 India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Bangladesh, and others.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Canada &amp; Europe<\/strong> \u2013 Canada, the UK, Cyprus, Malta.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Caribbean<\/strong> \u2013 Jamaica, Trinidad &amp; Tobago, Barbados, Grenada, etc.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Pacific<\/strong> \u2013 Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Samoa, Tuvalu, and more.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Deadline for Entries<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>final submission deadline<\/strong> is <strong>11:59 pm GMT, 1 November 2025<\/strong>.
