{"id":7350,"date":"2025-08-19T13:59:49","date_gmt":"2025-08-19T13:59:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/examkits.com\/blog\/?p=7350"},"modified":"2025-08-19T13:59:51","modified_gmt":"2025-08-19T13:59:51","slug":"fg-suspends-creation-of-new-federal-universities-polytechnics-and-colleges-for-7-years","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/examkits.com\/blog\/fg-suspends-creation-of-new-federal-universities-polytechnics-and-colleges-for-7-years\/","title":{"rendered":"FG Suspends Creation of New Federal Universities, Polytechnics, and Colleges for 7 Years"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a bold move to reshape Nigeria\u2019s education sector, the Federal Government has announced a <strong>seven-year suspension on the establishment of new federal universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The announcement was made on Wednesday by the Minister of Education, <strong>Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa<\/strong>, after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting chaired by President <strong>Bola Ahmed Tinubu<\/strong> in Abuja.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why the Freeze?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the Minister, this decision is not to block access to higher education but to <strong>address underfunding, poor staffing, and low enrollment<\/strong> in existing institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Currently, Nigeria has:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>72 federal universities<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>42 federal polytechnics<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>28 federal colleges of education<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet, many of these institutions are struggling. Statistics show that in 2024 alone, <strong>199 universities had fewer than 100 applicants through JAMB<\/strong>, while <strong>34 received none at all<\/strong>. Similarly, <strong>64 colleges of education recorded zero applications<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr. Alausa revealed shocking examples, such as a northern university with <strong>1,200 staff serving fewer than 800 students<\/strong>. He described this as a <strong>misallocation of resources<\/strong> that the government intends to fix.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Government\u2019s Plan<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The seven-year freeze will give the Ministry of Education time to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Fix dilapidated facilities<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Hire more qualified staff<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Expand the carrying capacity of existing institutions<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Minister emphasized that Nigerian graduates are still respected globally, but warned that producing half-baked graduates due to poor infrastructure would worsen <strong>youth unemployment<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Exceptions and New Approvals<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the ban affects <strong>federal institutions<\/strong>, nine private universities were recently approved. Dr. Alausa clarified that these approvals were <strong>old applications<\/strong> that had already undergone a long evaluation process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Importantly, the <strong>freeze also applies to private polytechnics and colleges of education<\/strong>, in order to avoid a repeat of the low-enrollment problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What\u2019s Next for Polytechnics?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A major reform under consideration is the <strong>review of the Polytechnic Act<\/strong>. If passed, polytechnics will be able to <strong>award Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) degrees<\/strong>, bridging the gap between universities and polytechnics and making them more attractive to students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Bigger Picture<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Federal Government insists that the suspension is like a <strong>\u201creset button\u201d<\/strong> for Nigeria\u2019s higher education system.
