In some centres, the paper didn\u2019t start until late in the evening. Students were seen writing under torchlight and even kerosene lanterns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Photos and videos quickly went viral on social media, showing tired and frustrated students still answering questions as late as 10 p.m. The images sparked anger among parents and educators, who questioned how a national exam could be handled so poorly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>WAEC has now spoken out \u2014 and they say there\u2019s more to the story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Really Happened?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), the delay was deliberate. In a statement released the next day, WAEC\u2019s Acting Head of Public Affairs, Moyosola Adesina, said the postponement was aimed at preventing exam leaks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe wanted to protect the integrity of the exam,\u201d Adesina said. \u201cThat aim affected how fast we could carry it out.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Other Factors That Caused Delays<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Aside from trying to stop malpractice, WAEC highlighted several other problems that slowed things down:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Difficulty moving exam materials across long distances<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Security concerns in some areas<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Local logistical challenges at individual centres<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These combined to create major disruptions that left students waiting for hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">WAEC Apologises and Promises Improvement<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>WAEC has apologised to students, schools, and parents for the inconvenience. Adesina acknowledged that while the council\u2019s intentions were good, the outcome was unacceptable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe know how important this exam is to you. We didn\u2019t mean to cause such trouble,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>WAEC added that it is now working with security agencies and local partners to prevent such issues from happening again in upcoming exams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">More Exams Are Still Ahead<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This year\u2019s WAEC timetable runs from April 24 to June 20. With more subjects still to be written, all eyes are now on WAEC to see if it can deliver the remaining exams without further delays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>WAEC says it remains committed to fairness, security, and timely delivery. But many students and parents remain skeptical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Final Thoughts<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>For students aiming for university admission and hoping to perform well in JAMB, every paper matters. Writing exams in the dark isn\u2019t just inconvenient \u2014 it\u2019s unfair and unnecessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>WAEC now has the chance to rebuild public trust.
