This major change means the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board will now handle all HND admissions across polytechnics, colleges of nursing sciences, colleges of health technology, and allied institutions. Let’s break down what this means for you.

What Is the New JAMB HND Admission Policy?

The National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) announced this directive in a circular dated September 9, 2026, signed by Executive Secretary Prof Idris Bugaje. The decision was made following a meeting involving Nigeria’s Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, and representatives from JAMB and the NBTE.

Previously, individual polytechnics handled their own HND admissions independently. However, the new centralized system means JAMB will now manage the entire process, bringing consistency and standardization across all institutions.

Which Institutions Are Affected by This Change?

The directive covers:

All federal and state polytechnics

Colleges of nursing sciences

Colleges of health technology

Other allied health institutions

If you’re interested in any HND program at these institutions, you’ll now apply through JAMB’s centralized portal rather than individual institution portals.

Why Did JAMB Take Over HND Admissions?

The centralization aims to streamline the admission process and reduce inconsistencies. Furthermore, this move aligns with the Federal Government’s broader education reform agenda under the leadership of the Minister of Education. According to Legit.ng’s report, the new arrangement ensures fairness and transparency across all polytechnic admissions.

How Does This Affect Your Admission Process?

Instead of applying directly to polytechnic institutions, prospective HND candidates will now follow JAMB’s admission procedure. This likely means you’ll register with JAMB, write the required examination or screening, and then be placed based on merit and your chosen institution’s requirements.

In addition, Tribune Online reported that the system will ensure uniform standards and prevent admission fraud across polytechnics.

What Should You Do Now?

Visit the official JAMB website for updated guidelines

Check your preferred polytechnic’s portal for specific HND program requirements

Prepare your JAMB registration documents early

Follow JAMB’s official social media channels for announcements

Read JAMB registration guide 2026 for step-by-step instructions

Related University News

On a related note, the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) recently released its 2026/2027 Post-UTME Screening Results, showing that universities are also streamlining their admission processes.

Frequently Asked Questions

When does JAMB’s HND admission process start in 2026/2027?

The exact dates will be announced by JAMB on their official website and social media channels. Typically, JAMB registration opens early in the year before admissions begin. Check the official JAMB portal regularly for registration deadlines and examination schedules.

Can I still apply to polytechnics directly, or must I go through JAMB?

From the 2026/2027 session onwards, all HND admissions must go through JAMB’s centralized system. Direct applications to polytechnics are no longer an option for HND programs. This applies to all polytechnics, colleges of nursing sciences, and health technology institutions.

Does this change affect UTME admissions to universities?

No. This change only affects HND admissions in polytechnics and allied institutions. University admissions through UTME and Post-UTME remain unchanged and are still managed by JAMB separately. However, both systems are now under centralized JAMB management for consistency.

Final Thoughts

The decision for JAMB to take over HND admissions is a significant step toward creating a more transparent and standardized admission system in Nigeria. Therefore, if you’re planning to pursue an HND, start preparing now by registering with JAMB and gathering your documents.
